With the explosive growth of consumer technology over the last decade, there’s no doubt that the trends of the next five years will be equally exciting. In Australia, the demand for consumer technology products is only increasing and there is a growing expectation that the newest products will offer a range of features and benefits. So what can we expect in the consumer tech trends of 2023? From smart homes to AI-infused products, the future of consumer technology is looking brighter than ever. In the next five years, we’ll see a surge of new products, services, and technologies that will revolutionise how we interact with our devices.

In this survey, we presented an Australia-wide cohort of 178 respondents with 25 future tech trends to ask what they were most anticipating to have an impact on their lives.

Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence is arguably one of the most important and heavily anticipated trends in consumer technology, especially when it comes to the way we use our devices and interact with technology. We’ve seen a rise of AI in consumer tech over the last few years, and there’s no doubt that AI will only become more prevalent in the next five years. A large part of this rise of AI will be due to the development of next-gen AI products, such as natural language processing, or NLP. NLP allows devices to understand and interpret human language so that we can interact with machines using plain language. NLP will allow us to talk to our devices just as if we were talking to another person. For example, we could ask our device to turn the lights on and it would know what we mean, even if we didn’t say the words “lights” or “on.”

41% of survey respondents indicated that AI will have a significant impact on their lives and/or work in 2023.

Autonomous Vehicles

Autonomous vehicles have steadily grown in popularity over the last few years, and it is believed that they will become a common sight in the near future. The future of autonomous vehicles also looks incredibly bright, and we can expect to see a lot of new developments in this field over the next five years. Autonomous vehicles are expected to hit the market in full force in Australia over the next few years, and are expected to be much more advanced and common than they are now. We can expect to see a range of new autonomous vehicle models, including passenger cars, buses, trucks, and more. Autonomous vehicles are expected to become significantly more affordable and accessible to the general public, making them a much more realistic option for most people. In addition to their affordability, autonomous vehicles are expected to become much more advanced and efficient than they are now. Over the next few years, we can expect to see autonomous vehicles become much closer to being a reality in Australian cities.

Surprisingly, 21% of survey respondents indicated that AI will have a significant impact on their lives and/or work in 2023. This is despite there being little to no indication that self-driving will be much of an option in Australia for the foreseeable future. When questioned on this response, several of the respondents indicated that they expected there to be autonomous driving for logistics operations such as freight trains and trucks as well as moves towards removing drivers from large scale public transport like trains and buses.

Virtual Assistants

Virtual assistants are another type of AI technology that we’ve seen grow in popularity over the last few years, and they are expected to become even more advanced in the next five years. Virtual assistants are programs that interface with our devices and assist us with everyday tasks and activities. They can answer questions, make recommendations, and even order items for us online. Virtual assistants make our lives easier, and they’re expected to become even more advanced in the next five years. We can expect AI-powered assistants to become more common and for these products to become more accurate and natural at interpreting human language. Virtual assistants have already become precise at understanding human language, but they’re expected to become even more advanced as technology improves.

18% of survey respondents indicated that they foresee their lives impacted by virtual assistants, usually in the form of artificial intelligence-driven help. 11 respondents specifically mentioned voice-controlled functions in Google and Apple devices as the reason for their response.

Robotics

Robotics is another industry that has enjoyed a lot of attention over the last few years, as more and more people are becoming interested in this field. Robotics is the science of engineering and programming autonomous machines that perform human tasks. Robotics has become a very popular industry, and it’s expected to become even more popular in the next few years. Robotics is expected to become more accessible to the general public, and popular robotics companies, such as Sony, are expected to release new and improved robotics products soon. We can expect to see a range of new and improved robotics products in the next few years, including autonomous cleaning robots, robotic toys, and more. Robotics is expected to become a much more common and popular industry in the next few years, making it a great investment for the future.

11% of our respondents indicated that robotics will impact their lives in 2023. And while we question the validity of this response, 6 respondents clarified their position saying that they are seeing robotics in places like restaurants (for running meals) and in packaging facilities as proof that this trend may impact work and home.

Augmented Reality

Augmented reality, or AR, is another important trend that we’re expecting to see grow in popularity in the next few years. Augmented reality uses computer-generated images and sounds to enhance our real-life experiences. As more companies explore and develop new AR products, augmented reality is expected to become even more advanced and popular in the next few years. More companies are expected to begin investing in AR technology, which will create a wide range of new AR products. AR has already become incredibly common, especially in the mobile device industry, but it’s expected to become even more advanced and popular in the next few years. In Australia and across the globe, consumers expect AR products to become even more refined and realistic and to provide a more immersive experience.

We were surprised by the poor showing of AR in this survey given the proliferation of AR gaming and apps on phones in the past few years. Just 4% of those surveyed selected this technology as significant for 2023. Perhaps the lack of many successful games apart from Pokemon Go – and the slow uptake of AR shopping tools has contributed to AR falling from the top-of-mind.

Quantum Computing

Quantum computing is another important trend in consumer technology that we’re expecting to see grow in popularity in the next few years. Quantum computing is a method of problem-solving that uses qubits, or quantum bits, to solve complex mathematical equations. Currently, most computers use binary bits, or bits that are either 1 or 0. This makes computers able to process and solve complex mathematical equations, but it also makes them slow and inefficient. Quantum computers use qubits, which means that they can be 0, 1, or both at the same time. This makes them much faster and more efficient at processing complex mathematical equations than traditional computers, making them an incredibly exciting innovation in the technology industry. Quantum computers are expected to become much more advanced and accessible to the public over the next few years. As this technology becomes more accessible, it will allow consumers and businesses to easily solve complex mathematical equations.

Only 1% of our survey respondents indicated that quantum computing would have any impact on their lives in 2023. Much of this can be attributed to very little being understood about this largely academic technology topic. Perhaps when quantum computers are talked about more frequently in the media – and when an actual quantum computing platform is demonstrated to the world, its impact on security and encryption will be understood.

Blockchain Technology

Blockchain technology is another important trend we expect to see grow in the next few years. Blockchain is the technology that powers cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin. This technology is expected to become even more advanced, and we can expect to see it used in various industries, including the healthcare industry. We can also expect to see blockchain become more accessible to the public, which means that people outside of the computer or tech industries can use and interact with this technology. As this technology becomes more popular, businesses and organizations outside the tech industry will begin to adopt blockchain, which could open up new opportunities for consumers.

There has been a considerable consumer backlash against anything to do with the blockchain in 2022. This has been led by the crash in the value of cryptocurrencies and the many NFT scams that have occurred in this past year. It’s safe to say that blockchain, at only 1% of survey responses, won’t be a big topic in 2023.

Conclusion

There is no doubt that the future of consumer technology is looking bright. We can expect to see all kinds of new and exciting technologies that will transform how we use and interact with technology. These technologies will offer a variety of benefits and will be much more efficient and effective than previous technologies. The future of consumer technology is exciting and will provide many new and exciting opportunities for consumers.

The key to engaging consumers is to provide use cases they can understand and see applying to their own lives. If the technology is too hard to explain, it may not feature in the consumption patterns of everyday people in Australia in 2023.
